January 18, 2009, marks the final day of a weeklong auction in which auto giant General Motors (GM) sells off historic cars from its Heritage Collection. GM sold around 200 vehicles at the Scottsdale, Arizona, auction, including a 1996 Buick Blackhawk concept car for $522,500, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 COPO Coupe for $319,000 and a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette convertible for $220,000. Other items included a 1998 Cadillac Brougham, which was built for the pope. (That vehicle was blessed by the pope but never used because of safety issues; it sold for more than $57,000.) Most were preproduction, development, concept or prototype cars.

Default Captain Cook discovers Hawaii

On January 18, 1778, the English explorer Captain James Cook becomes the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands when he sails past the island of Oahu. Two days later, he landed at Waimea on the island of Kauai and named the island group the Sandwich Islands, in honor of John Montague, who was the earl of Sandwich and one his patrons.

Confederate General Robert Edward Lee is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia during most of the Civil War and his brilliant battlefield leadership earned him a reputation as one of the greatest military leaders in history as he consistently defeated larger Union armies.

January 20, 1863 Montana pioneer James Fergus wrote about the Indian camp at Bannack being shot up that night. "Suddenly six or eight shots were heard in rapid succession across the river which were instantly followed by the most unearthly screaming and wailing from some Indian lodges on Yankee Flat, occupied by a few helpless squaws and papooses, doing no one any harm and living with us by virtue of an understanding or treaty made with the Indians last fall. I hastened over and found that some fiends had crawled up unperceived and fired into the lodges and killed one or two old Indians and squaws and several children. Of course consternation ensued and interpreters were sent for to ascertain who had committed this horrible deed and to assure them that the whites were not going to massacre them. Still more horrible to relate, while this investigation was going on the murderers returned reinforced and regardless of the presence of the whites and the wailings and anguish of the bereaved savages, fired into the lodges wounding four white men, one mortally, and more Indian women and children. What an atrocious deed! What a savage murder! The miners are aroused at last, murders are to be caught and punished." Moore, Reeves and Mitchell were the shooters. They fled town to escape punishment along with Henry Plummer who was worried that he too might face justice for killing Jack Cleveland a week earlier.

John Moses Browning, sometimes referred to as the "father of modern firearms," is born in Ogden, Utah. Many of the guns manufactured by companies whose names evoke the history of the American West-Winchester, Colt, Remington, and Savage-were actually based on John Browning's designs.
