February 18, 1878...Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory...Rancher John Tunstall is shot down by a "posse" sent to take custody of some of his livestock. The legality of the whole shooting has always been questioned and it may have been that the posse members, many of whom worked for the Murphy/Dolan faction, simply used the court order as an excuse to kill the rancher.
Most historians agree that this is the spark that ignited the Lincoln County War.

On this day, Operation Detachment, the U.S. Marines invasion of Iwo Jima is launched. Iwo Jima was a barren Pacific island guarded by Japanese artillery, but to American military minds, it was prime real estate on which to build airfields to launch bombing raids against Japan, only 660 miles away.

February 20, 1725...A group of New Hampshire volunteers attacks a band of Indians and takes 10 scalps. This is the first known instance of Americans taking up this Indian practice. Authorities in Boston paid 100 pounds for each scalp.
