Default What happened...

to all the restaurants that served down-home style meals? Like ham and beans with cornbread, chicken and noodles on mashed potatoes, goulash, liver & onions, etc. They seem to be getting few and far between around here. Guess everyone wants fast food.

Thats a good thought Rman. Up until I tried to retire a few years ago, I worked in a little town, Keota, Ok, about 20 miles west of here. They had only one Restaurant when I first started working there, but later had two. One was owned by Indians and the other an older white lady. They both served home cooked meals just like your Mother cooked years ago. Home made biscuits and cornbread. People would go there for miles around and they were always busy. Those kind of places have become extinct. I prefer home cooking to fast foods any day. If I get a burger, I want a Barbeque one and baked beans from Wild Horse Barbeque's at Sallisaw, Ok. People fly into there from everywhere to eat Barbeque. You don't find a dog or cat, or roadkill for miles around there.

That's a good one Calvin! Topeka is about 140,000 and we only have 2 old-fashioned cafes that serve real food. I think we have every imaginable franchise restaurant. Most of them are over-priced and their food isn't that good. There is a little place downtown that is always packed because their prices are right and so is the food. It's run by a little old man who probably isn't going to be around forever. Too bad, because we will lose a great place.
