Default Boomerangs!

Bet I'm the only one. I can't throw a football 60 yards, but I can take a little stick and throw it in a 60 yard diameter circle with a full return. You either love it or don't care. I'd like to get into Long Distance, where the longest 'rangs can go 200! yards out with a full return. With the regular Long Distance ones, you stand at one goal post and throw it around the other. Kept from it by lack of skill.

I have an MTA, though. Stands for Maximum Time Aloft. You don't catch those, you just want it to stay airborne the longest. Mine is a beginner's model, good for only about 30 second flights, but the longest recorded flight was over 17 minutes. They catch a thermal and sometime just fly away. Guess that's the best way to lose a boom, though.

The hardest part is finding a place to throw, that is a MINIMUM size of a football field, flat, with few or no trees. If there's one tree in the middle you're guaranteed to hit it. The Kilimajaro on the left was my favorite 'rang 'till I lost it in the trees Good for about a 65 yard elliptical flight. The MTA is on the right.

Dave, you have an Interesting Hobby. I think you are the first person that I personally know, that throws Boomerangs. Bet it would be fun when you learn to do it.

Dr. Dave Boomerangs:

That's pretty neat. Thanks for sharing. I'm going on the internet & look into that.

As a youngster I had a fairly good wooden boomer to play with. I practiced hard but never got it to come back. I did get it to make some fish hook curves but then I hit a tree & that was the end of that.

Benvenue, the fact yours rarely came back means you didn't know the four rules! Two are science, you do the same every time, two are the art you do based on the wind direction and strength at the moment of release. I'm right-handed, so I have to use right-handed booms, which you throw right of the wind (lefties throw left of the wind). You want the angle off to be about 40 degrees. Next, the angle up is at the horizon, tweaked up so you're aiming at the tips of the distant trees. Those two are the science.

The artsy two are power and layover. Spin is king, not power. You have to judge how hard to throw based on what that boom likes and how strong the wind is. Layover is how much sidearm you throw. Never throw true vertical, never throw sideways. Each 'rang likes more or less. Generally, the more wind the more vertical, to power against the wind like a boat pushes against the water. You look exactly like a baseball pitcher when you throw.

Look left to check your wind ribbon; adjust to the wind; visualize the throw. Bend your knees, exhale, and let 'er rip. It's totally a zen thing. Like I said, I can't throw a football (or anything else) 60 yards, but I can throw a little stick in a 60 yard diameter circle. I also can't throw anything that stays in the air for 30 seconds, but I can keep my MTA up that long. And it's just a stick!

People will stop to watch, not realizing they're too close and in the way. They all stop and hover at the end, then come straight down. That's when you catch 'em. If they're coming in hot and heavy, get out of the way! Broke my collarbone ignoring that rule. Here's a couple more pics of the different shapes

Dr Dave that is pretty interesting, thanks for sharing this. Heck my farthest shot taken of something was Jupiter with 4 moons, but I've never tried the boom.... I mean a Wham-O Boom when I was younger. I will have to check them out now.

J B, one of the most memorable things I've ever seen was Jupiter through a telescope. I went over to Tim's dad's house, and we could only find the medium powered lens, but Tim knew how to find Jupiter. It glided across the viewfinder majestically. It was awesome to know I wasn't looking at it through anything electronic, I just had really good eyes.

It said, you are insignificant and I am Majesty. It was awesome. We looked at the moon but it wasn't the same.

Good place to buy 'rangs: http://www.flight-toys.com/

If you can find anything by Colorado Boomerangs they all fly and look cool, but I can't tell if they're out of business, you may have to get used. Remember to buy a right-handed rang if you're right handed (left if you're a lefty)!

The best beginner boom is a Yanaki; it's what I use to warm up, I have three. Sweet and gentle. Get one here: http://www.boomerangs.com/yanaki.html

BTW, if you throw a boomerang with a 60 yard diameter circle, it travels 188 yards total. That's a cool stick
