Default 1st time out in 3 years

I didn't realize it has been 3 years since I went to the range. I can't think of a time in my life that I ever went without shooting for that long. Anyway I packed up my stuff and headed for the outdoor gun club about noon today. Things didn't go smooth right off the bat. I wanted to shoot on range 1 or 2, but found only range 3 was free. It is the largest range, but has a fixed firing line and has target stands at 25 yards. The other 2 allow you to move as close to the target stands as you want. I didn't want to shoot targets at 25 yards so I settled for shooting at the metallic silhouette at 50 yards. My first shot was from an M&P9 2.0 Compact. I hit the metal target, but the gun didn't eject the round. Try as I might, I couldn't get the round out of the chamber. I still don't know what is up with that. Then I got out the HK VP9 and shot 19 rounds at the metal silhouette. Surprisingly, I hit them all. Then I got out the 9mm Ruger SR1911 Commander sized gun. I shot another 20 rounds at the silhouette and hit all 20 shots. Another surprise. You can definitely tell when you make a hit by the ringing of the steel. I forgot to bring a can of spray paint, so I don't know where my hits were - just know they were on there somewhere. About that time the realllllly old people on range 2 left. I packed up my stuff and moved.

I set up a 12x18 paper silhouette at 7 yards and tried out the Ruger 1911 first. I'm not too proud of the groups, but I guess they weren't terrible. I shot 20 rounds on that target.

Put up another silhouette at the same range and tried out the HK VP9. Shot another 20 rounds on that target. That group was significantly better, but still nothing to brag about.

That range has a metal shooting tree and I shot up another 20 rounds alternating between the Ruger and the HK. That was pretty fun and I only had one miss.

Altogether I shot 80 rounds. 1 from the M&P, 39 from the HK and 40 from the Ruger. Except for the M&P there were no malfunctions. These were a combination of 3 different reloads using Sierra 125 gr JHP bullets. Some used Power Pistol, some were CFE Pistol and the others used Auto Comp powder.

Anyway I had fun. It's not the same when you don't have your old shooting buddy to go with you, but I finally bit the bullet and did it anyway.

Thanks dowop! I'll try to do better next time. (It won't be another 3 years.)

Good shooting. I hope you figure out the M&P, they are usually very reliable pistols.

Nice shooting. I take a dowel that I've used to clear jams at the range.

Thanks - I'll give that a try. I don't carry one because I almost never have malfunction.

Thanks panther. I've probably put a 200 rounds thru the M&P before with no problems. I've had some problems with the Sierra 125's though. They have a funny ogive and the recommended COAL doesn't work in some of my 9mm guns. I've had to the shorten the overall length to ensure functioning in several of my 9mm guns. 1.120" may still not be short enough to function in the M&P. I don't have that problem with Hornady 124 gr JHP bullets

Good shooting rman.

After considerable evaluation of those targets, I gave have come to the following conclusion. I DON'T WANT YOU SHOOTING AT ME!

Please keep us updated on the M&P9 malfunction.
