On this day in 2009, a potential disaster turned into a heroic display of skill and composure when Captain Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III safely landed the plane he was piloting on New York City's Hudson River after a bird strike caused its engines to fail.

On this day in 1831, Victor Hugo finishes writing Notre Dame de Paris, also known as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Distracted by other projects, Hugo had continually postponed his deadlines for delivering the book to his publishers, but once he sat down to write it, he completed the novel in only four months.

1/16/2002 - The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted sanctions against Osama bin Laden, his terror network and the remnants of the Taliban. The sanctions required that all nations impose arms embargoes and freeze their finances.

Anyone know why they don't do this to North Korea?

Bonnie & Clyde hit the Eastham Prison farm to help Raymond Hamilton escape.
While prisoners are in the field working, Clyde lays down a barrage with his BAR. Hamilton retrieves 2 1911's that are hidden nearby and shoots some of the guards, one of which died.

Hamilton and 4 others get away. This attack on the prison system is what put Frank Hamer on their trail.

The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the ?manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,? is ratified on this day in 1919 and becomes the law of the land.

(This was a dumb idea.)

On this day in 1953, a prototype Chevrolet Corvette sports car makes its debut at General Motors (GM) Motorama auto show at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The Corvette, named for a fast type of naval warship, would eventually become an iconic American muscle car and remains in production today.
