May 24, 1856 Outraged at the sacking of Lawrence, abolitionist John Brown and a party of Free-Staters murder five pro-slavery activists in rural Kansas Territory in the Pottawatomie massacre. In the three months of retaliatory raids and murders that follow, more than two dozen people are killed, marking the bloodiest episode of the Bleeding Kansas era.

On this day in 1975 The grizzly bear is classified as a "threatened" species, the grizzly bear-once the undisputed king of the western wilderness-is given federal protection as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
Before the Anglo-Americans began invading their territory, the grizzly bear inhabited most of the country west of the Mississippi from Mexico north to the Arctic Circle. Its only serious competitors for food were the Native Americans, who considered it a sacred animal-although they did hunt the bear as a test of strength and its long claws were prized symbols of status. *Now that the grizzly bear has reached sustainable levels, the bear huggers do not want to allow managed hunts to keep the bear population at a controllable level.

We have the same problem here in Florida with Black Bears. They are nowhere as dangerous as Grizzly Bears However we have the occasional mauling, many sightings in suburban 1/4 acre track home developments. They mostly raid trash cans, and kill pets. Some wacko's actually put out food for them even though that's illegal. If I had a neighbor doing that I would turn him in. Florida is the only state with a population of more than 600 bears that does not utilize bear hunting as a population management tool. Florida Black bear adult population estimated at 4,350. There could be 1,000 to 2,000 cubs. I think they picture these cuddly looking creatures as Gentle Ben, Smokey and even "The Charmin TP Lovin' Bear Family."
