Default Load testing

Made it to the range for a few minutes to test some reloads. Guns used were a S&W Mod 66 4", SA XD40 Service, Ruger Super Blackhawk 10 1/2". I fired 18 rounds thru each test load.

357 Magnum

2 loads/bullets were tested. Both of these were loaded with 13gr WW296. COAL 1.585 and is listed at 1,025 fps and had moderate to heavy recoil out of a 4" barrel. I will be testing both rounds in my Marlin 1894 357 in the future.

#1. Missouri Bullet Company .357 Pugnose 180gr WFN Flat-Base Hi-Tek 2-Extreme Coating. Accuracy was excellent. (The 66 loved this round)

#2. .357 Sierra 38 CAL 180 gr FPJ. Accuracy was very good.

40 S&W

Only load tested was a Missouri Bullet Company IDP #7 140 gr. loaded with 4.6 gr HP-38, COAL 1.165, listed at 990 fps. I think the COAL was too long and would not feed properly. I will adjust the length down and retest.

44 Magnum

One bullet and two powders were tested. Both had a COAL of 1.600 and is listed at 1295 fps. Both had very good accuracy and had heavy recoil, even for a 10 1/2" barrel. These would be excellent hunting loads. They were sure slinging dirt on the berm. Both will be tested in my Marlin 1894 44 in the future.

#1. Hornady 300gr JHP loaded with 18.5gr WW296.

#2. Hornady 300gr JHP loaded with 18.5gr H110.

H110 and WW296 are supposedly the same powder, but I felt a more sharper recoil from the H110 than I did with the WW296.

Sorry there are no target pics, but there were people waiting to shoot after I got done so I didn't take the time to take them.

I hope this isn't too boring.

Not boring to me Teddy. It's interesting. We have really different loads for those calibers. In the past, most of my shooting has been done with lighter bullets, the idea being that I would use them on coyotes called in. I mostly load 125 gr bullets in .357 Mag, 170 gr in .41 Mag and 200 gr in .44 Mag. None of them would be suitable for deer. I use pretty hefty doses of H110 or W296 for all 3. They are fast, accurate and flat shooting and recoil isn't too bad because of the light-for-caliber bullets. They have some pretty serious muzzle flash though.
