Great Horned Owl rescue
Today after a great time at the National Bison Reserve, while driving with my wife to Missoula, I saw a Great Horned Owl sitting in the grass not moving. I stopped got some photos. The owl didn't appear to stress at my presence, I approached and realized, this owl needed rescued. I went back to our vehicle and grabbed a blanket, went back and the owl didn't seem to mind my presence again, so I slowly wrapped the blanket around the owl and picked it up.... I will say when they close their talons they have great strength. Lucky for me that I moved my fingers quickly, as the owl was just trying to grab a hold like they were a branch I guess. **The crushing power in a Great Horned Owl's talons is reputed to range from 200, to an incredible 500 lbs. per square inch, ten times on average stronger than the grip of a typical human hand, so once the talons sink through the prey's back, most prey are killed instantly.
A family pulled up in a pick up that had turned around and came back to where we were on the highway. I told them we had our border collie with us and she wouldn't like the owl in her vehicle etc... they made calls to several aviary rescue places and was told to call one in Dayton, MT. Their son came back with a moving blanket, and I had him go back to their pick up and sit where we could make the transfer in the cab, and once done they were on their way with the owl.

You did a good deed Jon! Nature can be amazing, the owl knew he needed help and that you were there to help, not harm so it let you handle him. Good job!

Update on the Great Horned Owl recovery. The owl arrived at Montana Wild Wings Recovery Center on Saturday afternoon. It was determined that it had possibly ingested something that was poisoned in a farmers field. When I found it, there was a small carcass that it had been eating on. Beth at MWW told me that it had thrown up a large chunk of ugly stuff that smelled terrible. They have been treating it with pedialyte to help cleanes the owls insides... today it flew some and appears to be getting better.
