Whack & Stack
These are photos of gar that Tristan shot with his bow this afternoon. He shot them from a john boat in the flood water along the East side of Lake Perry.
He got the 13 shown above. His buddy got 11 more. He says it's great fun. They just look like alligators with no legs to me. They have a guy that buys them to eat. They took him over 400 lbs today.

Not sure, but I imagine he pressure cooks them. My Mom did that with carp when I was a kid. You can't get all the bones out of them, but if they are pressure cooked you can eat the bones without worrying. Most people turn up their noses at carp, but we were really poor in those days. They actually are quite tasty. If you think about it, carp are a lot cleaner fish than catfish. Now gar are a different story. They're also ugly, boney, but eat other fish, frogs, snakes and what have you.

That's what Mom did with them also, but I don't have a clue how to go about it and don't have a pressure cooker.

We had a next door neighbor who was a fantasic Italian cook. Tessie begged us for a carp to give it a shot. So we gave her a caught from a water company clean and clear lake about a 5 lb carp. let it swim in our little pool a few days before guttin it for Tessie to do her magic. I looked great as served but between 5 of us I would bet no more than a pound was actually consumed. Maybe fish cakes might work but baked sucked. i ate "gefilte fish", carp like deli sliced meat and it was horrible too. No more carp for me!
