Default Outshot by Hi-Point 9mm Carbine

The first range trip with the DPMS Oracle was certainly a learning experience. The rifle came without sights and I added UTG flipup front and rear.

The rifle shot about 3' high at 25 yards with the UTG sights. I took an old BSA 30mm red dot and never got that one quite dialed in. While I was doing the "where did they go?" bit, a guy a couple lanes down was blowing the X ring away with his new Hi-Point 9mm Carbine. (The gun show dealer I bought the Oracle from had the HP 9mm and .45 ACP carbines at less than half the price of the Oracle.) I also shot better groups with my S&W M&P9 and Ruger SR9 25 yards, unsupported than I did with the AR from a rest.

I learned a few things from this trip:
1. A boresighter is probably cheaper than ammo. And you can get by only for so long winging the scope/sight adjustments.
2. I need to remember that I actually know a little trig and a quick calc would have suggested that the front sight needs to come up about 0.5".

3. The rail I put the front sight on is ~0.5" lower than the rear sight rail. If I had remembered #2 at the range I could have checked that out with a short sight radius.
4. If you want an inexpensive, pistol caliber carbine, Hi-Point makes a good shooter.

Boresighter and short rail to add to the front rail is on the way.

I did get to wow a couple of guys by putting 10 of 10 into a 5.5" Caldwell marking target with the hand guns. I got really wowed by the guy who was shooting a variety of Colt revolvers.

When you get that Oracal sighted in I'm sure it will shot better.
How did it work, mechanical wise? Is the rifle worth keeping?

I never had luck with BSA sights. I am sure bore sighting the rifle will help alot. Let us know how it turns out on your next range trip.

Functioned quite well. It'll be about a week before I get the parts.

It should be decently accurate greener. Mine shoots about 1.5 MOA with cheap factory loads. I think it will do better with some good handloads. There really isn't much shame in getting outshot by a Highpoint at 25 yards. They shoot amazing well for a cheap carbine. I know a guy who has one and thinks it's great. Once you get yours sighted in, challenge him at a 100 yards!
