.40 S&W Lite loads
Tristan has a little Springfield XD Subcompact chambered in .40 S&W that belonged to his Dad. It's kind of a mean little guy to shoot for any length of time. He wanted some bunny fart loads that would be fun to shoot, but still be reliable and accurate enough at 10 yards to make them interesting to shoot. I showed him how to run the reloader and he did a good job. He has loaded and tested the following for functioning and reasonable accuracy. We shot a few last week and the rest today.
Federal American Eagle Cases CCI 500 Primers Berry's 165 gr Plated FP Bullets Springfield XD Subcompact - Stock Recoil Spring 3.9 gr of Hodgdon HP38 - Only 1 of 10 functioned the slide and ejected the case. 4.2 gr of Hodgdon HP38 - Function good, recoil light. 4.2 gr of Hodgdon Tite Group - Function good, recoil moderate. 4.0 gr of Winchester WST - Function good, recoil very light. 5.9 gr of Accurate AA#5 - Function good, recoil light. 5.8 gr of Alliant Power Pistol - Function good, recoil moderate. 3.2 gr of Alliant Bullseye - None would cycle the slide. Dirty with unburned powder. 3.5 gr of Alliant Bullseye - All cycled the slide, but wouldn't lock open on the last round. Recoil light, Dirty with unburned powder. It looks like WST may be the powder of choice. Good function, acceptable accuracy and burns clean, but HP38 and AA#5 deserve another look. Back to the bench...
