Default Speery Glacier then and now

These two repeat photos show Sperry Glacier from Comeau Pass in 1930 and in 2009.

Did you know there were over 100 glaciers in Glacier National Park when the park was established in 1910? Today, 26 active glaciers remain. To document the changing landscape, repeat photography has become a valuable tool for communicating the effects of climate change. Repeat photos are taken in late August and early September, as glaciers can be difficult to distinguish throughout most of the summer when seasonal snow covers the park's glaciers. As the park service has pointed out, you might notice the lack of seasonal snow on the mountains off in the distance or even on the glacier's ice, which tells us these images were taken around this time of year.

Since 1966, Sperry Glacier has receded over 100 acres. Today, at roughly 200 acres in size, it's still one of the larger glaciers in the park even though it's no longer visible from this vantage point.
