Default Hog Hunter

I mentioned in the Coffee Shop awhile back that I bought a Savage Hog Hunter when I was at Kansas's place. It's kind of a homely little mutt. It has an OD green synthetic stock, a medium heavy 20" barrel threaded for a suppressor, iron sights and an oversized bolt handle. We took the scope off my AR15 for a quick trial run and shot some Federal factory loads thru it. It acted like it wanted to shoot pretty well.

When I got home from SE Kansas, I did a little more work on it. I cleaned the bore, took the action out of the stock and adjusted the AccuTrigger and put it back together. I'm not big on iron sights with my old eyes, so I removed them. I took off the scope mounts, cleaned the oil out of the holes, put a little blue Locktite in them and put the mounts back on. I had a new scope at home. It came with really high scope rings so I took them off and put on a set of Blackhawk medium height rings.

The next day I took this little beast to the range. I had 6 test loads that I made up for the AR15. I shot about 10 rounds of factory loads through it to foul the bore and get it sighted in. Then I tried out the reloads at 100 yards. All groups are 5 shots.

Federal Brass
CCI 400 Primers
Hornady 55 gr Vmax Bullets

Hodgdon H322 Powder
21.0 Gr - 1.100"
22.0 Gr - 1.155"

Hodgdon H335 Powder
21.5 Gr - .830"
22.5 Gr - 2.060" ??

IMR 8028 XBR
23.5 Gr - .870"
24.5 Gr - .940"

Overall I thought it shot pretty well. Several of these groups would have been really good if I would have quit at 3 shots instead of 5. All but 2 of the groups had at least 3 holes touching. I think with a little more experimenting,I will find a load that will shoot even beter. I really like the AccuTrigger. The pull feels like it is about 2 lbs and it breaks clean, with very little overtravel. I think it's going to be a pretty slick little rifle for just over $400.

That would be good for Kansas, but not for my place here in Okla. Where the Hogs stay, you're within 25yds. at the most, before you can see them. Open sights work real good here for hogs, and most deer hunting. Deer do get out in the open more than hogs, so a scope sometimes work for deer here.

I was planning on bringing my Ruger Blackhawk .41 Mag too. Got it sighted in for 50 yards today. I wasn't planning on using the .223 for the hog hunt. (Even though it's called "Hog Hunter".

Today I got the Lake City brass I ordered. I did some loading and took the rifle to the range again this afternoon.

Lake City 09 Brass
CCI 400 Primers
Horn 55 gr Vmax Bullets

All groups are 3 shots @ 100 yards. 2 groups shot with each load.

H322 22.0 gr - .430" and 1.330"
H335 21.5 gr - .940" and .975"
8028 24.0 gr - .500" and .465"
8028 24.5 gr - .425" and .500"

This little guy is a half MOA rifle with IMR 8028 XBR. That's what I was hoping for, but much better than I expected.

But I took the iron sights off already and I don't think I want to mess with it. I can shoot my my .357 mag, .41 mag, 44 mag or .45 Colt Blackhawks pretty well out to 50 yards. At 25 yards, I don't know why a 1911 with hollow points wouldn't work. My problem is finding something that the kid can shoot. He doesn't shoot big handguns well and right now we have no rifles with iron sights. I don't have a scope on the AR right now, so I guess I could put a flip up rear sight on it. If worst comes to worst, I'll put the iron sights back on the hog hunter. I wish I would have kept one of the lever action Marlins - that would have been perfect. Maybe we'll just stay home.

I think you can turn your Center Point down to at least 25yds. The ones I have will anyway.
Maybe some slugs in my Super Nova Benelli would work.
You gonna back my up in case they don't?
