Default Keeping the old ones running

My plan to get a FEG Hi-Power got trashed when an undercab mounting panel on my 1987 S10 split and started collapsing. As might be expected, the other three panels showed strong signs of deterioration of the same sort.

Finances said no replacement truck in the picture, especially since the rest of the truck seems to be in excellent condition. The total came to $400 to have replacement panels welded in place which will hopefully give us several more years of service. I'm fortunate a huge amount of restoration work had been done before I bought it.

The shop that did my work said mine is the third one in the last year they've had to replace panels on (Mine was the oldest). I had a problem understanding the problem is common enough that GM markets the panels for their S-series and regular size pickup.

Gosh, caneman. That sucks! At least you should get a few more years of service out of the truck.

Too bad about the pistol Caneman, but you kept your priorities straight. There are few things more important than guns, but transportation is one of them.

With the price of gas, alot of guys at work are talking about fixing their old rides up, rather then buying something new(or newer), and having to deal with car payments.
$400 on the truck is a good investment, there will be FEG High Powers out there later.

I consider myself pretty lucky. While I'm really too old and infirmed to contribute in the workforce, I'm staggered by the thought that those who must work to even survive, are faceing with the cost of gas to even go out looking for a job. Couple that with the rising cost of groceries and I'm glad I don't have to trade places with the 30-40 year olds.

Those of us who like I was, lived 55 miles from their work, would have to set aside 15% of their income for travel and maintenance expenses. Even more if you figure in replacement costs.

You're so right caneman. It makes me glad I retired last fall.

Took my 03 S10 out to my buddies body shop last tuesday and wednesday and put it up on a lift and replaced all four shocks, new rotors, pads, wheel bearings, rear drums and brake shoes. It should be good for the next 100,000 miles. I was going to have our Chevy dealer do it, but when they started talking $90.00 each for the shocks, I about . They wanted almost $1200.00 for all the work I did for $300.00. Maybe I should open a small repair shop.

I need to find a friend with a body shop Or anybody with a lift. I'm getting too stiff to get under my 92 Ranger and do anything. I have ramps I've used for years but things go faster and easier when the vehicle is up in the air! I worked at Penney's Auto Center for 3 1/2 years in college and the benefit was being able to do oil changes & other work at cost.

God bless our servicemen - past and present!! Happy Independence Day Everyone!

Thumbs up

Delford, that 92 Ranger looks incredable! You sure take good care of it. It seems like the Rangers just run forever with a little care. I've had 2 Fords but tend to be a Chevy guy. The Chevy S10 with the 4.3 V6 go good too. The 4.3 V6 is a 350 small block with 2 cylinders chopped off and everybody knows the 350 is the best engine ever made by anybody. My Corvette is a 350 and sqeezes 485 HP while getting 20-30 MPG. Good luck with her, she's a creampuff!
