Default Victim of assault, gets 18 months in prison

A Connecticut man who was assaulted by three juveniles while at work has been sentenced to prison for stabbing one of the attackers.

The Connecticut Post reports 21-year-old Jeffrey Sumpter of Bridgeport received 18 months in jail Monday at a Stamford courthouse.

The paper reported that Sumpter - who was convicted of felony first-degree assault - also will have to spend three years following his release on probation. If he breaks the law during that time, Sumpter could be made to serve all or part of a 42-month prison sentence.

Sumpter was working at a Dunkin' Donuts in Norwalk last October when he was jumped by three males. During the assault, Sumpter stabbed one of them in the leg.

"I was defending myself," Sumpter said during the hearing.

Judge John Blawie told Sumpter that he believed his version of events, but had to follow the letter of the law.

Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states - most notably Florida - have passed so-called "stand-your-ground" laws, which entitle citizens to use force in self-defense if there is a reasonable belief of a threat.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Connecticut is another state filled with archaic laws, judges and liberals.

Thumbs down

Sounds like a crock of crap when you face time for defending yourself!

Connecticut is one of the higher cost of living states and you don't get the right of self-defense. How do you retreat when it's 3 on 1?

I turned down an offer to be transferred to the corporate research headquarters in Stamford, CT, years ago. Stamford is in the highest cost of living county and borders Greenwich. I figured I might break even at 4x my salary. Needless to say that's where the negotiations ended.

Greener, unfortunately the hood you buy in and the clean lifestyle we live has zero effect on the laws enacted by the liberal buttheads. In fact, upper class hoods are more anti self defense than the ghettos. Go figure, I can't. Why should we fear an attack or worse yet, face prosecution for defending ourselves? We elect the law makers yet they only seem to make laws we don't want? I don't get it, what's wrong with guys like Sheriff Joe running law enforcement?

I'm lucky - Kansas is one of the most gun-friendly states. So far, stand your ground has been upheld here in every case. Predominantly rural states have a more realistic outlook on guns, hunting, shooting, and self-defense. Our state has faced some lawsuits from the Feds for thumbing our nose at them, but since Obama is gone, so is most of the litigation.
