Default New Battle Rifle

US Army eyes new automatic rifle that fires with pressure equivalent to tank

The reporter writes - "A new Army assault rifle will tear through any body armor with the pressure of a battle tank, strike from unprecedented ranges, and withstand the rigors of weather, terrain and soldier use, Army Chief of Staff. Gen. Mark Milley told The Military Times.

The new 6.8mm rifles, which are expected to be in use by 2022, will offer major improvements in capabilities over the decades-old M16 and M4 weapons, the Army claims."

Personal thought: I believe the 6.8mm SPC cartridge is a lot more powerful than the 5.56x45 NATO cartridge, but is less than the 7.62x51 NATO that had been used previously. Me wants some time behind the butt of a new 6.8x43mm rifle - could be real fun.

A bit more insight to the 6.8mm SPC cartridge: https://hubpages.com/health/556x45mm-vs-68x43mm

YMMV

6.8 SPC is a good round. Its ballistically similar to the .270 Winchester. It is a pleasant round to shoot in the AR platform, however ammo availability leaves a lot to be desired as far a brick and mortar stores go. Its available online in several places. I feel the ammo is a little pricey, so reloading is the way to go.

Just my 2 cents.

It is a superior round to the 5.56mm, but it's not the powerhouse they make it out to be. If they plan to stick with the m16/m4 platform, it's probably about as good as it gets. It's still light ammo and allows the troops to carry a good deal more than 7.62x51mm. (But not as effective.)

But, but, but.... experts say that the 5.56 is the deadliest round made (if fired from an AR15), too powerful for hunting, good only for killing. You could probably stop a charging elephant with an AR15.
