Default Seniors, fitness and safety: what's your program?

I've been thinking about how a regular exercise program and practicing shooting fit together in being able to take care of oneself

Here's a link to an interesting article on physical fitness for seniors:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/24/he...620f3d&ei=5070

I notice how often balance, peripheral vision, hearing, dexterity, and a core vitality are the difference in those who exercise and take notice of their surroundings. I notice such a difference in the very elderly.

I've started jumping on a rebounder (a small trampoline) on days when I don't go out for a walk. Along with Callanetics and stretches, I can see progress. I used one of these rebounders many years ago and had great results with it. Decided to take it up again. I need to add finger and wrist strengthening. I notice it when I'm shooting.

What do you all do for co-ordination, balance, strength, dexterity, etc?

(Ooops, just realized I ought to have put this in Healthy Living.)

I try to eat healthy foods, and my Grandkids take care of the exercise.

My neighbor and I walk everyday. Not brisk, far or long enough but it's better than nothing.

When the weather permits I have plenty of exercise to do. I've got to break my garden with a tiller and fence it. It is 50x100'. I have wire that is 6' tall and I'm going to set it 6" under ground level to keep the varmints from digging under or jumping over. The wire is 2x4" mesh so it ought to keep most stuff out that would eat the plants.

That should keep you busy all right! If I had a garden that big, it would take up half of my back yard!

Yes but think of the things you could have that you don't have now with the same piece of property. Might even cut down on the mowing. Just a thought!!

Probably should have kept that one to myself, ya think?

You'd just have to take care of the garden rman, sometimes more work than mowing

Been there - done that. When I was a kid we had a one acre garden. We had blackberries, asparagus, green and wax beans, peas, beets, carrots, onions, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, okra, tomatoes, potatos, rhubarb, strawberries, cantalope, and watermelon. This was in addition to a one acre orchard that had apples, plums, peaches, apricots, cherries and pears. When I wasn't on a tractor, I was weeding, digging, picking, etc. I'm getting lazy in my old age - I just want a few nice tomato plants!

By the time we get through paying for the health care for all the illegal immigrants, we might all be trying to grow gardens like that. Bet they won't have to buy insurance either.
