Default .460 Rowland

I don't know if anyone wants more from their .45 ACP but there is much one can do to increase it's power and effectiveness. I use to be a huge fan of the 10mm cartridge, but truthfully it is pretty much on the level of a .357 Magnum unless one buy's or reloads to get mild .41 Magnum performance levels in ballistic power. For now we will discuss the .45 Gap to .44 Magnum.

What I do like is, that I can carry the .45 Super, and not have to buy the .460 Rowland barrel for this chambering for my Glock 21. Adding an stronger recoil spring is recommended, and advised from research gathered.

For other pistol conversion options to 460 Rowland, visit http://460rowland.com/

Here are some example pressures and ballistics for the various 45 caliber pistol cartridges (Underwood Ammunition)

Cartridge Bullet Weight Chamber Pressure Muzzle Velocity Muzzle Energy

45 GAP 230gr 23,000 900fps 414ft/lbs

45 ACP 230gr 21,000 900fps 414ft/lbs

45 ACP+P 230gr 23,000 1000fps 511ft/lbs

45 Super 230gr 28,500 1100fps 618ft/lbs

460 Rowland 250gr 40,000 1350fps 931ft/lbs

45 Win Mag 230gr 46,500 1600fps 1,307ft/lbs

In comparison, here are Underwood's comperable 44 Magnum loads to 460 Rowland:

44 Magnum 240gr 1400fps 1,045ft/lbs

44 Magnum 300gr 1200fps 959ft/lbs.

Interesting. At my age, recoil might be a problem. I'd want a heavy pistol to shoot it in. Last fall I shot a S&W .500 Mag revolver. It wasn't painful, but it was unnerving.

Actually shooting with the threaded comp or ported barrel, makes recoil not bad. I'm going to work up to the .460 Rowland, as the .45 Super is pushing about the same FPS as .45 Colt loadings for a Ruger Blackhawk.

The nice thing is I don't have to shoot .45 Super all the time, but can practice with .45 ACP.

Right now the .45 ACP is plenty, just want something more when going afield.. I like my options with minimum payout for another firearm

What do you do - just swap barrels? What about magazines? The Super should be a longer round. (I think)

No the .45 Super is the same case length of the .45 ACP, it is the .460 Rowland that is a hair longer on the OAL so you won't slip it into a regular chamber. Magazines stay the same, several report better over all performance changing or adding an extra spring in the mags.

For me I will purchase an aftermarket threaded barrel from Lone Wolf because the chamber is better supported unlike Glocks OME barrels. Add a 22 or 24# recoil sping and the comp.

When I want to jump up to the .460 Rowland I can send the barrel into Lone Wolf and have them ream it up to proper length. I figure by then, I will be reloading for it, and can roll my own. Here soon it will be snowing again, and the bears will be denning up, and I won't be spending time in the outdoors anyway. I like the idea that I can go from the low to the extreme if I like, and have fun doing it.

Question Duh

Sorry, but I'm a no idea what y'all are talking about but a .50 Caliber S&W sounds like it'll accomplish even better results???

No Veter I don't want a 50 cal, as my goal is only to work with the .45 ACP through the .460 Rowland should I desire the .460 Rowland. I want to be able to still carry my Glock 21 for conceal carry or with either the .45 Super or .460 Rowland for the woods. I love the Glocks availability in just adding barrels, to accomplish what I want.

The attached image, has a comp/muzzle break that a friend of mine machines out of steel bar stock, unlike those produced by leading sellers online out of machined aircraft aluminum which can have the flutes or baffles burned out after 500 rounds.
