Default Chasing the $3700 Pickerel

Third time on the boat this year, today. The summer is whizzing by. The landing I use has "pike" and bass pots. A winner is the largest citation fish of the the day (bass, 24" 6lbs; pickerel 24", 4 lbs) or the pot rolls. The pickerel pot was $3700 so I beat the water with "pikey" lures and a few rest periods chunking ultralights. One pickerel bight, right through the line. One 5-6lb bowfin brought to the boat before he spit the lure. Only thing of interest was a 3' plus cottonmouth sunning on a tree branch. What a day to decide not to bring a camera! This is one of the larger cottonmouths I've seen in quite a while.

I got pretty close to get a good look. Mr. Moc stayed coiled on the branch and just gave me the evil eye. Five miles from the launch and at least a mile from the nearest house. This is what the area looked like a couple years ago with higher water. It was his territory, I was just visiting.

Me and Cottonmouths have a problem sharing the same territory. Same with Copperheads and Rattlesnakes. I share with the other non poisonous snakes.

I've sent my share to slithery dee heaven if they decided to occupy territory that people or livestock used. That even applied to blacksnakes and other larger nonpoisonous varieties that were around our $20-$100/lb chickens. If they were outside my territory I never had much interest in dispatching them. That also applied to 4-legged varmints.

I with you on that. If they are outside my territory, they don't bother me. I have lots of wildlife around the Ranch and enjoy it. Some things and people don't mix well though. Bears, Lions, and Hogs I can do without on the Ranch.
