Default .17 WSM in my future

That's right, I'll be buying the Savage B-Mag 17 with the 8 round rotory magazine, and will top it off with the BSA 17 6-24x44 varmint scope.

Found one identical at Walmart for $249

Description:
Savage B-Mag Bolt Action Rifle in 17 WSM Caliber. Factory New in Box. 22" stainless steel heavy barrel. Black synthetic stock. 8 + 1 capacity. New Accutrigger. Drilled and tapped for scope mounts. 1:9" twist.

That will have to wait for Spring... pretty much everything outdoors is buried butt high in snow, and the indoor range only has a max yardage of 50 yards... not worth paying $25 to shoot there.

J_B we've had one around here since they first came out. The one I bought was the skinny barreled one. The heavy barreled model had not been announced at that time. It's not as accurate as the .17 HMR, but still shoots pretty well for an inexpensive, skinny barreled rim fire. Mine groups 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" at a hundred yards. It was at least 6 months before we could find any ammo for it. At first it was hard to find ammo and it was expensive. Now it's readily available and costs about a dollar a box more than .17 HMR ammo. Tristan shot a racoon with it and it pretty much field-dressed it. I shot a crow with it and the result wasn't pretty. It is impressively powerful for a rim fire. If you use it on small edible game, or small fur bearers, shoot for the head.

It will be a gopher and prairie dog getter for sure.... I just might have to add this one later on a .17 WSM in an AR platform.
