Default Strange I think

I have a 2010 Chevy Equinox front wheel drive SUV. It is equipped with a little 182 horsepower 4 cylinder engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission. My wife drives a 2013 Chevy Impala with a 300 horsepower V-6 with a 6 speed automatic transmission. They both weigh about the same. My average gas mileage is 23.5 mph. Hers averages 27.5. What the heck is the deal?

My cracked brain theory is that for best mileage you need to match vehicle weight to engine size.

Ben's rule of thumb is one liter of engine for ever one thousand pounds of vehicle weight is the baseline.

rman says. "They both weigh about the same." Yep, but one has a four banger working hard & the other has a six banger moving the freight.

My wife would just say she was a better driver.

Thumbs up

Sharons Impala has a 3.2 liter, DOHV 24 valve , first year in production "super engine" for it's size replacing the rock solid 4.2 liter witch simply a 350 V-8 with 2 cylinders removed. The 350 V-8 is still the most popular GM engine ever and thousands are sold as "LS Crate engines." The 3.2 was EPA MPG rated at 18/30 so She must drive mostly highway and must be an an excellent driver as far as backing off the accelerator whenever possible. My hat is off to her, that's the way I was taught to drive, I wish Wifey drove more like that. Your 2.4 liter 4 banger is EPA rated at 22 city and 32 highway, 28 combined so you may have a heavier foot or Gm is asking a lot outta the little 4 banger. My Nissan only has 176 HP but it seems peppy enough and gets really good MPG, 28 now overall. That little 2.5 liter is EPA rated at 29 combined MPG and it's doing pretty close. I don't think 23.5 is too bad for the Equinox, it sure is a great all purpose vehicle!

Actually the 3.6L LFX DOHC Variable Valve Timing Direct Injection engine replaces the 3.5L that replaced the 3.4L that replaced the 3.2L that replaced the.. well you get the idea. Before the 3.6, a few Impalas had the 3.8L Buick engines. I had one of them.

The 4.3L was used in some S10's and the full sized Chevy pickups. My 2009 Silverado had a 4.3L. We've owned about 5 Impalas since 2000. We'll probably have the 2013 until we die. (And I get as good mileage driving the Impala as Sharon does. I'm not too sure that it doesn't do better if you put a little foot in it. )

We have had 4 of the 4.3L engines. One was a throttle body injection in a 93 S10, the rest were the Vortec's, one was in a 98 GMC Jimmy, the other two were in a 2003 S10, and my current 2004 S10. They are excellent motors.

Thumbs up GM 4.3, best all around engine ever!

My buddy Jimmy bought a new early model Jimmy with a 4.3 back around 1982. Bar room drag race to come he said he could beat my 77 1 ton Dodge, 360, 4 barrel, 4:10 spicer rear, 727 torque flight. This truck was a beast. I gave his little V-6 a couple car lengths off the line so he could get a good look at me flying past him. Well, surprise, surprise, I guess it took to 50-60 before I took over and was getting scared because that 4:10 rear would soon run me outta the RPM's that made it a beast. The 350 crate engines are still legendary and sell like hotcakes but for all around efficiency, economy and durability the 4.3 may very well be the best engine ever made. After all, it's simply a 350 V8 with the #3 and #6 Cylinders removed. Hard to find a 32 Ford hot rod without a 350 crate engine. Hard for Ford to swallow since 32 was the first year of the Ford flathead V-8. My Corvette ZO6 engine is still sold, ready to fly as an "LS6" from GM.
