Next years beans
I read somewhere that you can plant dry beans from the grocery and grow them just like beans in the seed box. I think next year I'll get some mixed beans like you use for bean soup and plant different varieties a lot cheaper than buying them by the box.
The only down side I can see is not knowing for certain wether you have bush or climbing varieties. I'll plant them all next to string trellis and if they climb fine and if not I haven't lost anything. |

I planted a row of Red Potatoes, and later planted a row of White Potatoes. When I dug them, some vines had red potatoes, and some white, in the same row.

We only had one 4X8 raised bed of Red potatoes this year. I wish we had a lot more yard to plant.
Our porch is 10' deep though. I think I'll put in the bean strings along that area and that will give me 20 foot of beans planted and open up an extra area for more potatoes. We have four 4X8 raised beds and 16 foot bed across the front of the porch for tomatoes. The rest of the area is kholarabi (sp), peppers, radishes, beans, a few spices. I wish we had a half acre. We do have 2 apple trees, 2 peach trees and 2 cherry trees. They are just starting to produce but should get better each year. |

Interesting question on the dry beans, I know that when we were kids we used to root them in coffee cans then transplant them, it worked then but that was many moons ago, I assume it will now? Surely a dry bean is still a dry bean.

I'm for sure going to add a package of mixed bean seeds for a survival garden. That much variety is more than I've ever planted.
My biggest problem is not enough land to have variety. Corn takes room as do watermelon, cantelope, squash etc. My neighbor put up a 3' fence and said I could plant berries against it. |
