Default When it's really DARK

I?m sure most of you have at some time been in a place when it was DARK. I don?t mean dark as the lights are off and you have to navigate by the light from the street light through the window from a pole forty yards down the block. I mean dark as ?I can?t see my hand in front of my face? or ?what or who is that I can hear moving around? or even ?where is that tree I leaned my rifle against when I took a leak.

In my case, I?ve been in a coliseum basement without lights in a near panicky crowd, in a dark building checking an open door when my flashlight failed, walking home from the neighbors 200 yards away on a totally dark night, and in Carlsbad Caverns when the power failed and the guide said ?everybody just stand still because the emergency generators will come on in a minute?, and it was one of the longest minutes of my life.

I?ve also on two occasions recently been in one of those settings when I had one of those single LED keychain lights on my car key chain. It?s amazing how much focused light you gain from a single LED. In my living room I can easily see individual books in the bookcase from fifteen feet away. Outside, I easily found the tiny foot bridge across the little creek coming home from the neighbors. Had I not had the light, I would have been feeling my way along with my cane to keep from stepping off the creek bank.

With that in mind, I just ordered a dozen of those little lights from Sportsman?s Guide for under $9 and will attach them to Christmas presents with a piece of paracord so the kids can hang them from a cup hook by their back door. They can wear it like a necklace when out after dark as an emergency light or always be where they can easily find it any time. At worst, it gives enough light to find the better super bright light or light a few candles.

I have been in dark like that caneman. Dark so black that I couldn't see a thing. Dark that made my skin crawl. Dark that made me wish that I had one of those little LED's.

GOOD IDEA you have there! I think I'll follow your lead caneman. Thanks for reminding me.

Great idea Caneman! My wife gave me one of those little lights from L L Bean and I carry it on my key chain all the time. Comes in real handy at work when I have a computer apart and I'm try to see the slot to add memory, etc.

Those little led lights are the cats mew, when caught without a big light. I have some like Panther won that is about 3" long and is 3watts and uses one AA
Battery. It fits good in your pocket and will shine good enough that you can see anything in the room and will shine more than 50' outside. If anyone wants one PM me and I'll make you a deal on a new one.

Just an update - Since I posted this a couple of years ago I hear there are some new lights out there which are brighter and are made as post top lights for driveway or farm 4X4 posts. I'll probably watch for a couple this summer.
