I have had the Chevy's and Fords both, they are a truck simply put, I liked the Chevy engines for ease of getting and swapping parts etc. However, they seem to rust more so than the Fords back in the 70's, 80's & 90's.
I purchased a new Ford F-350 back in 2006, 4 X 4, ext cab with V-10 engine, running .373 gears in the rearend. It gets 14.7 on the highway doing 70mph in overdrive. In the city stop & go driving it gets chopped back to 12 mpg. If I pull it hard, over 8,000-lbs it drops down to 9-mpg. I now have 45,000 miles on the truck. I still perfer the looks of the new Fords and I just might pick out a Diesel if Ford can get the bugs out of this new engine!!!

My family always owned Fords, mostly pickups. I have a 2001 F-150 with 235,000 miles on it. All city driving. It runs like new. I only use full synthetic oil in it. My wife just got a new 2011 F-150 4x4 supercab. Her first Ford and her first V8. I had a 1995 F-150 Lighting. FAST! It was fun. My favorite was my 1977 F-100 custom. It only had an Auto trans. Manual steering, manual breaks, no AC, Inline 6.

My trucks were in this order. VW 1961, VW 1968, Dodge Club Cab 1974 gentlemen's truck, Dodge 1 ton beast 1977 360 4barrel 411 spicer rear, Chevy 454 3/4 ton Suburban 1969 Silverado trailer special (the big block is still going strong in an airboat on Lake Okeechobee), Chevy 1984 beater in line 6 stepside and now a 2005 Honda 4X4 Element (Franne's). Some I loved, some I like and some not so much. Trucks are cool, (except Honda Elements)!

Old thread but I have 2 cents worth of yack.
My family was always GM partial. My last truck was a GMC Sierra Classic, short bed, step side, 4X4. I bought it used (second car) for snow travel & general hauling. Despite the struggle with rust & 14 MPG I loved that truck. Don't have a truck now but I wander the used lots looking at compact beaters. Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma would do for me. There is this fellow up the road that has an old Chevy short bed, step side, 2X2 sitting in his side yard. He uses it sometimes & doesn't want to sell. Maybe I'll stop by to say hello. |
