I'm new to the wildlife problem. About 3 years ago beaver chewed down a willow with a trunk about 10" thick but the deer, rabbits and squirrel have me wondering. I bought a post driver for less than $20 and some 2X4 opening fence to protect some of the plants from the small critters abainst the house but not too sure about doing new trees. I put in a couple of new willows last spring and so few just have them protected with that heavy plactic wrapping. I don't think that will be enough as the trees get to a more tasty size.

We're seeing more deer than ever so that presents a problem that's new. The plastic wrapping I've been using only wraps the first 24" of the trunk so that sure won't do the job to browse heights. I'm thinking of stacking coffee cans up to the top of browse heightsto get the trees a start for a few years. Don't know if that's practical or if it would work. It kept squirrels from climbing the posts to the bird feeders but that's a different story. I probably could have done that by spraying hot pepper juice on the posts too but it would have to be redone every 3-4 weeks.

I really hope I find something cheap for the trees cause they're expensive to replace. Come to think of it though, I've got some saved apple seeds I could start with.

I have wraped young trees with aluminum, that seems to keep the critters from chewing on them. Deer are a different problem. They like to munch on young tender leaves. I think a 30-06 is the cure for that, though.

Well, it is supposed to start raining, so today before the rain hits, me and the Father-in-law, who is in his 80's went out and played in the . We picked up two truck loads of Cow Patties, where my Son has been feeding hay, and put it on the Garden. My Father-in-law almost worked me to death. I hope I'm just nearly as good as he is when I get into my 80's.

The wife bought seeds today so it's on everyone's mind. We still have 4" of heavy snow on the ground though.

Finally got my Garden ready and stated planting. The Garden is 100' long and I planted 4 rows of potatoes, one row of onions, one row with blueberrys, Grapes, and elephant garlic. Planted the onions about 3" or less apart, where when they get the size of half dollars, we can start pulling every other one and eating them. We had to work more on the fence so Sharon and I are exhausted today from the work we did yesterday. Got lots of other seeds to plant when we get out of danger of frost.

That's a pretty big row to hoe, Calvin. You, Sharon & the rest of the family will have a busy, but enjoyable summer!

Sounds like a great garden, Calvin! It's fun & relaxing watching things grow. Lot's of hard work is involved, but it's rewarding.

This is my first garden in a long time. We had a Garden when I was a kid, but I got started working, and didn't take time for one. Now that I'm retired, I poisoned the grass in a 50'x100' place in rich, well drained, sandy soil on my Ranch. I put a 6'ft 1x2 welded wire fence around it, which I''ll probably have to extend to keep the deer out. I put a couple of loads of Cow Manure on and tilled it up good this spring. I have 4 rows of potatoes, which are just now coming up. 1 row of onions that look good. I planted a perimeter row around it with Castor Beans and Elephant Garlic. I have grapes and blueberries leafing out. Planted Carrots, Radish's, Beets, Turnips, Tomatoes, Huckleberries, Corn, and Peas yesterday. Still have room for two rows. Will plant Clemson spineless Okra, Pinto and Great Northern Beans.
