Default .17 WSM vs Rocky Racoon

I think I probably mentioned buying Tristan a Savage BMAG .17 WSM rifle a couple of years ago. The WSM is a pretty impressive little rimfire cartridge. He's been using Winchester 25 gr ammo in it and it is rated at 2600 fps. The 20 gr ammo is rated at 3000 fps. Until this evening he has only used it at the range. Just a while ago he saw a coon eating the corn he has been putting out for deer. He ran downstairs, grabbed the BMAG and shot the coon. It was facing him at 50 yards. He took a chest shot and it flipped over backwards and never moved a muscle. It basically eviscerated the little bandit. It looked like it had been shot with a .243 Win. I'd estimate he weighed 20 lbs. Some folks say this round would not be suitable for coyotes. I say horse pucky! I sure wouldn't be afraid to try one out to 150 yards or so.

i'm pretty sure the .17 WSM would take care of a coyote at a reasonably short distance. Say, 150 yds or less.

I was really surprised by it's performance on that coon. It was almost as bad as a prairie dog hit with a .22-250. It is definitely NOT a small, edible game caliber.
