Protecting tree trunks
Two years ago one of our lake beavers started cutting down one of our willows by the lake. Either we or the dogs frightened it away before the tree was killed but the bark was badly chewed nearly all the way around.
I bought a section of 8" black PVC corrugated pipe, cut off a three foot section and then cut up the side to allow, with my wife on one side of the split and me on the other, us to pull it apart far enough to slip over the trunk. It really worked great. It's been two years now and I think we'll have to come up with a new protector next year. The tree has survived, which was more than I expected, and I think we'll have to come up with a new larger size protector. I think next spring I'll have to try something like a section of chain link fence to be strong enough to fend off something as destructive as beaver, perhaps even a double wrap. About eight years ago they chewed down a willow tree with a 10" dia trunk and had it in the lake, towing sections away in a less than 45 minute period. I don't want to lose the two we have now. |

The DNR did say I could use a shotgun (No single projectile weapons) but that means sitting 24/7 watching the trees. It's amazing how fast a beaver can fell a tree.
