SPEER GOLD DOT 45ACP primers
I don't know how y'all do it, but I switch out my carry ammo every year about this time and today was the day. I noticed that my "old" ammo had large primers and that the "fresh" ammo has the small primers. I knew Blazer Brass ammo had small primers in their 45acp ammo, and it now appears SPEAR is doing the same with theirs.
Anyone else ran across something like this? "Old" ammo on the left, "fresh" ammo on the right. |

Sure have Teddybear. I first ran into it about 3 years ago. I was reloading some range brass and couldn't get a primer to seat. If I remember correctly, it was made by Federal and was out of a box of "eco friendly" ammo with lead-free primers. It's a real pain if you're a reloader. I read an article recently where they tested reloads, using both large and small primed cases. Their conclusion was that the small primers provided slightly better accuracy in .45 auto cases.

I just wonder if they are making the small primers similar to the small magnum primers of yesteryear. |

Dunno Teddy. If you think about it though, there isn't a whole lot of powder to ignite in a .45 Auto case and they usually use one of the faster burning powders. I just hate having to sort .45 cases.
