Default On this date in History:

I thought I'd start a new thread of happenings from the past. Hope ya'll don't mind. Please play along with your own points of interest.

Here goes:

1903 - Orville Wright made the first attempt at powered flight. The engine stalled during take-off and the plane was damaged in the attempt. Three days later, after repairs were made, the modern aviation age was born when the plane stayed aloft for 12 seconds and flew 102 feet.

Jan 2, 1967 In what is described as the biggest air battle of the war to date, U.S. Air Force F-4 Phantom jets down seven communist MiG-21s over North Vietnam.
The Phantoms were flying cover for F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bombers, which were attacking surface-to-air missile sites in the Red River Delta. During this operation,
Col. Robin Olds shot down one of the MiGs, becoming the first and only U.S. Air Force ace with victories in both World War II and Vietnam ("ace" was a designation
traditionally awarded for five enemy aircraft shot down).

"Just the facts, ma'am." Sergeant Joe Friday's famous catchphrase enters American homes via a new entertainment device: the television. A popular radio series since 1949, the police drama Dragnet became one of the first TV series filmed in Hollywood, instead of New York.

Question

1/4/2007 - Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. She was the first woman to hold the position.

Can we make her the first woman Speaker to be fired?

January 4, 1864 Erastus "Red" Yeager and George Brown, were hanged by vigilantes from a cottonwood tree in the Ruby Valley near Laurin. According to Dimsdale, before he was hanged Yeager confessed, divulging the names of 25 of Henry Plummer's associates, named Plummer as the leader and revealed the gang's code word, "I am innocent". The gang of robbers were thereafter known as the Innocents. The Vigilantes left the bodies hanging from the tree as a warning to the outlaws. A note was pinned to Yeager's body "Red! Road Agent and Messenger." and to George Brown "Brown! Corresponding Secretary." Professor Thomas J. Dimsdale wrote the first account of the Vigilante activity during the Montana gold rush. He demonized the men that were hanged while glorifying the Vigilantes. Some modern historians are not convinced by the story as no list has ever been produced and none of the members of the gang were given a legal trial with the exception of George Ives. Prof. Thomas Dimsdale.
