Default McManus Fishing Trip

For a long time, Patrick McManus was one of my favorite outdoor humorists. I have a number of his collections, a couple autographed. McManus' fishing trips were always a sequence of disasters: fishing car, equipment, boat, motor and, usually, no fish. Think I had one of those today.

Decided to pull the boat with my 93 ranger. Discovered that the transmission and clutch are a lot closer to me making a donation to my favorite mechanic's "send my kid to Harvard" fund than I thought. Decided to attempt navigating a 3 mile stretch of shallow, stumpy, fallen-tree river to get to the legendary gravel pits where bass are big as cows. Made 2.5 miles and found a stump with my trolling motor resulting in shattered the shaft bracket and the head, shaft and motor in the river. Definitely a no outboard stretch and I learned that my tennis elbow was not as healed as I thought after the 2.5 mile paddle. Was thinking that the new ultralight rod I bought was great, just before the tree branch in the boat emergency shortened the rod by 6". 95?F, decided that I had all the fun I could stand for a day.

A bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office. I had a great day on the lake.

Sounds like your fishing trip turned out like some of my hunting trips back in the day! My hunting buddy then, and I used to call them "Silly Safaris". It seemed like something always went wrong. (But it was still always fun!)

Your right greener, "A Bad Day Fishing I Better Than A Good Day of Working Anytime"!

" Silly Safaries" sound pretty interesting, rman.

Default Ready to Go Again

Found a replacement trolling motor shaft bracket for only a third the cost of a new bow mount assembly Had to cut the old assembly off because of corrosion.

Lucked out with the replacement. I needed some snap-ring pliers (at least they would have made it easier) and actually found the ones I bought ~15 years ago and used once or twice. I have a wad of tools that I've bought for one job and then never need them again. Or, if I need them, it has been so long since I used them last I misremember where I put them and usually don't find them until after I've bought the replacement and used them. I seem to be building quite a collection of duplicate tools that I use once or twice.
