Alliant Black Mz Substitute Powder
I was skeptical at first, since it's sold at Sportsman's Warehouse for $9.99 which if far less than the others like Pyrodex, 777, Blackhorn 209 etc I read many reports, and all giving great results. Clean burning, no fouling which is unheard of in muzzleloading.
Alliant Black Mz is the equivalent of FFg, and I am totally stoked over how easy it is to clean up afterwards. I have shot strings of 16 and 20 shots on separate days with the same results. I pre-load so that I can spend more time shooting, than loading in the field, and use 90 grains by volume in my .54 cal Lyman Great Plains Rifle with it's 1 in 60 twist.

To be honest, I didn't know Alliant made a black powder substitute, but I don't keep up with it any more. I can tell you that Pyrodex doesn't shoot that clean! It shoots well and shoots clean - looks like you found something there.

Here are my 3 patch clean up from shooting 20 shots, using Alliant Black Mz - a friend shooting his T/C inline 50 cal had to use lots more patches etc as he was swabbing and cleaning about every 3 to 4 shots... he shot sabots and Pyrodex pellets as well as 777 pellets.
My cleaner is just a mixture of Windshield washer fluid and Isopropyl Alcohol 50/50 mix from the BPCR days.

And then of course after, I run a patch with T/C's Bore Butter on it to coat the inside of the barrel, then run a second clean patch for any excess.

Mz
Good stuff. In addition to the comments above, Black MZ works in flintlocks without having to use a BP kicker.
I was very pleasantly surprised since bp substitutes normally will not work reliably or at all in a flint gun. Clean up was a breeze. Pete |
