Default .38 Special

4.5 grains of Universal with a 158 grain lead round nose seems to be a good load for a 4" GP100 and an S&W 65-4. Has a little snap, but not much in those revolvers. 4.0 grains of Unique with the 158 gr lrn seems to be pretty accurate. It is a much better load for a session with a J-frame.

GP100 with mostly 4.5 gr Universal.

Looks like your reloads are doing a good job for you Greener! I haven't loaded any .38s in years. I used to load 158 Gr SWCs with gas checks that I cast myself over 5.0 Gr. of Unique. That was a pretty heavy load. I never shot them in a J-frame, but I'm guessing they would have been a handful. Sure shot good in a Ruger Security Six though. I'm not sure what they consider max nowadays with Unique. The data in the manuals has changed over the years. That's probably because they have more reliable means of measuring chamber pressure now.

4 grains of Unique with a 158 gr bullet are pitty-pat loads and make shooting the J-frame less wearing. I would imagine 5 grains of Unique would sting a bit. Nice thing about the GP100 is that it is heavy enough that the recoil doesn't bother you all the way up to some fairly stout .357 loads.

Maybe we ought to start a thread called "Revolver Disease" I think I may have a case of it.

Just give in, Kansas. You know you want to.

Nice shooting, Greener. Keep practicing and you might hit more than just that one spot.

I may be forced into withdrawal. Hard to find ammo around here. There is even a short supply of .22. There seems to be even a short supply of primers. One of the leading gun shops has no small pistol, no small rifle and only a few large pistol primers. Looks like I might get into air gun shooting.

That's the way it is around here greener. I've had to hunt all over for primers and powder. I'm lucky I laid in a good supply of bullets before Obamamania hit everyone. The air gun shooting isn't a bad ideal. I've got a Crossman CO2 that looks like a 1911. When I get range fever and can't get there, I break it out and shoot a few founds in the basement. It's pretty accurate - even has adjustable sights! I also have an old Crossman pump, single shot pistol that is very accurate. Until I replace my air rifle, it's doing duty as 'defender of the bird feeders' against attacking raccoons, crows, etc.!
