Jan 25, 1864 Cyrus Skinner, Johnny Cooper and Alex Carter were hanged by the Vigilantes at Hell Gate. Shortly after midnight the prisoners were marched out to an impromptu gallows at Higgins corral. Skinner, a saloonkeeper at Bannack had known Plummer in California when they were both incarcerated in San Quentin Penitentiary in 1858. Skinner, alarmed by the Vigilante activity, had left Bannack and opened a saloon at Hell Gate 200 miles away. However, he did not go far enough to escape the determined Vigilantes. Skinner was terrified of hanging. As he was about to be hanged he broke away from his captors and ran through the snow screaming, "Shoot! Shoot!" The Vigilantes were unmoved by his pleas and marched him back to the hastily constructed gallows and hanged him and his companions. "I am innocent." exclaimed Skinner and leaped from the dry goods box he was standing on breaking his neck.

Jan 26, 1875 Pinkertons maim Frank and Jesse James' mother. Mistakenly believing Frank and Jesse James are hiding out at their family home,
a gang of men-likely led by Pinkerton detectives-mount a raid that leaves the outlaws' mother permanently maimed and their nine-year-old half-brother dead.

The first Prohibition law in the history of the United States is passed in Tennessee, making it a misdemeanor to sell alcoholic beverages in taverns and stores. The bill stated that all persons convicted of retailing "spirituous liquors" would be fined at the "discretion of the court" and that the fines would be used in support of public schools.
