Chronograph Data .357 Mag Rifle vs Revolver
I chronographed these loads back in 2015. I use them in a Rossi 92 lever action rifle. This is the gun I use for pistol caliber in Cowboy Silhouette matches. Just for kicks I decided to check some in a revolver. These are mild loads using .357 Magnum brass and cast bullets
The load: Norma Brass, CCI 500 Primers, Berry's Hard Cast 125 gr. SWC bullets and 5.3 gr. of W231 powder. The gun: Rossi 92 .357 Mag carbine with 20" barrel String 1 #1 - 1173 #2 - 1158 #3 - 1159 #4 - 1175 #5 - 1162 #6 - 1186 #7 - 1194 #8 - 1167 #9 - 1161 #10 - 1177 #11 - 1209 #12 - 1165 #13 - 1155 #14 - 1186 #15 - 1193 #16 - 1189 #17 - 1177 #18 - 1151 #19 - 1194 #20 - 1163 High - 1209 Low - 1151 Extreme Spread - 58 Average - 1174.7 Standard Deviation - 15.6 The gun: Smith & Wesson Model 60 .357 Magnum 3" barrel #1 - 870.1 #2 - 858.2 #3 - 823.3 #4 - 826.1 #5 - 819.8 #6 - 848.1 #7 - 795.8 #8 - 804.6 #9 - 808.8 #10 - 786.1 High - 870.1 Low - 786.1 Extreme Spread - 84 Average - 824.1 Standard Deviation - 26 Note that the average velocity for the rifle was 1174.7 fps. The revolver's average was 824.1 fps. That is a difference of 350 fps. That figures out to be about 20.8 fps per inch of barrel length.
