Sloppy Joes

When I was in high school, we only had one meal in the lunch line that I liked. It was sloppy joes, baked beans and homemade cinnamon rolls. Those sloppy joes were to die for. Sharon has tried a half dozen different recipes, but none of them taste like the high school's sloppy joes. She said they had the same thing where she went to school and all the kids loved them. If anyone has an old-time sloppy joes recipe, I'd sure appreciate it if you would share it.

I have to agree on the sloppy joes. I bought a sloppy joe and a scoop of mashed potatoes with gravy for $.32 every day for lunch. If I had found money at the bus stop or turned in pop bottles I had an extra $.04 for a small carton of milk. Livin large.

Slim weeks I'd have a PBJ sandwich and sometimes even 2 in the brown bad from home. The brown bag was usually an empty bread wrapper that I always had to take home for the next day.

Times were simpler and life was good.

On the recipe here's what my wife does. Not quite like the H.S. joes but I like them even better.

1 pound of hamburger
1 cup of catsup
1/2 medium onion
a small squirt of mustard
1 teaspoon of brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste

Good luck and happy eat'in.

That sounds pretty good caneman. I think I'll get the "Old Broad" to whip me up an order.

When the kids were growing up we did some dollar stretching with substitution. Sometimes it was 1/3 ground venison with 2/3 ground beef for sloppy joes.

Since venison is generally a drier meat the wife still occasionally fixes a meatloaf with 1/3 ground pork and 2/3 ground beef. Sometimes it even today to save a buck it goes to 1/2 & 1/2.

Spaghetti sauce also works with any combination of the 3 meats.

Here's a recipe from the internet

School Style Sloppy Joes
1 pound hamburger
Chopped onion
1/2 cup ketchup with water to make 3/4 cup
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Shake of Worcestershire sauce
1 can tomato soup (undiluted)

Brown hamburger with onion and drain. Add other ingredients and simmer until warm through. Serve over hamburger buns.
